Featured Seller - Blue Scarab Jewelry

What part of the world are you in?

I am in Franklin, IN, near Indianapolis

What does customer service mean to you?

Everything! I would not be in business without my customers, so I make it a priority to give them a wonderful buying experience from start to finish.

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?

It would have to be this super-sweet gal that lives here locally to me. She admitted that she is "Addicted" to my shop, and whenever she has some extra cash, she pops in and purchases a new piece(or two!) of jewelry. She always asks for extra business cards to hand out for me. That is the greatest compliment for a customer to be so into your work that she wants to help get the word out!

What sets you apart from other sellers who are selling similar items?

I pour my heart into the pieces I make, and I do think it reflects in my work. Plus I believe that Quality craftsmanship and Customer Service are all part of the package, so I thrive on giving my customers a fabulous experience from the moment they step "eyes" into my shop. I also offer a "Lifetime Guarantee" on my work, so if anything were to happen to their jewelry, they can always send it back and I'll fix it!

How did you learn the skills that make you successful today?

Online tutorials, crafting forums,20and over 10 years of tweaking and perfecting! A great thing about making jewelry is that there are endless techniques and processes, so I am constantly learning new things, which I love.
Do you have any formal training in your craft?
Nope, unless you count online tutorials lol:)

What is your goal for the next year?

My goal for 2009 is to take my business more seriously and work on keeping a consistent Style & Image. I want to be one of the shops where you just see one of my item photo's and say "Oh, that's Blue Scarab!" If I want to be taken professionally, I have to get it together professionally.

What keeps you motivated when sales are slow?

Creating new pieces always keeps me motivated and hopeful. That and perusing the other fabulous Etsy shops that are still doing well in tough times keeps me going.

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage re-occurring business?

I am walking advertisement for my jewelry-I NEVER leave the house without a couple pieces on, and people always ask where I got it from. I have business cards handy and whip them out like crazy! And I always put discount coupons in with my orders to encourage repeat business. I also like to include something else small I've made, usually a stamped bookmark or a card, just to say "thank you."

If you could share one piece of advice with someone who is considering opening their own store of handmade items, what would it be?

One thing?! Always believe in yourself and stay strong. Success will not happen overnight, but don't let that discourage you. Keep pushing!

Thanks Blue Scarab Jewelry for the fantastic interview! We love your exquisite wire wrapping and stunning gemstones! Each piece is interesting to look at, and very unique! We wish you all the luck with your sales this year, we know you will do awesome!

Meditation Offerings & Gemstones!

For many of us, meditation is an extremely important part of our lives. The space you choose for your meditation should be special, and located in an area where you can sit either on a meditation cushion or a chair comfortably, while enjoying your time alone.

If you have the ability to assign a personal space, where you can spend a few moments or longer, just enjoying the benefits that meditation brings to your body and your inner being...you will understand the importance of adding items to your meditation area that would inspire you.

Often, a personal meditation space includes items that instill calmness, happiness and inspiration to continue your practice. Offerings are a small way to personalize and introduce a balanced environment. Pictures, incense, statues and Gemstones are often the "offerings of choice".

Gemstones, with their own beneficial Metaphysical Properties, can bring a grounded feeling to your practice, and is a wonderful way of giving back something precious during your meditation session. The beauty and natural essence of gemstones would be a wonderful addition to your surroundings.

Enjoy your quiet time!

*Bracelet shown: Gemstone Jade Fluorite Meditation Bracelet by VintageBohemian, available for $16.99.

Featured Seller - Amberae (& The Harf)

what part of the world are you in?

I live in North America..... in the mountains... in a tiny house with two dogs, a husband and a rug rat.

what does customer service mean to you?

I believe customer service is pretty important. Getting items shipped as soon as possible is my #2 goal. I think its pretty important to be in contact with your customers. It lets them know they can trust you in an untrusting world.

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?

At this point, they are all memorable. I haven't had that many, but I appreciate every single one. I think its fun to see that people like my things. Maybe its silly, but its more important that people like what I make rather than making the $ from it.

What sets you apart from other sellers who are selling similar items?

Does anyone else make harfs? (MADE THAT Admin has never seen a Harf before, but we LOVE them! That's the reason we are featuring Amberae...just a little F.F - fun fact!) not sure, and they surely don't call them harfs b/c everyone makes fun of me for naming them such. I think its probably just the name of my silly product that sets me apart.

**(We will be back to buy a Harf Amberae, just so you know, we are just tight on funds at the moment, but we think everyone should own this multipurpose, cozy and funky looking item!!)**

How did you learn the skills that make you successful today?

My mom taught me crochet when i was probably about 12. so, i'm a crochet nut. but it caused me to have this obsession with yarn. I can't get over it. its intense. so i had to learn to knit and my sister tried to teach me. I about had a nervous break down trying to knit a scarf. then a couple years later my mother in law gave me a book on knitting baby hats. it just so happens 3 months after that i got pregnant. i guess i had some modivation to learn. then i couldn't stop knitting. i still can't. i always have a project going.

Do you have any formal training in your craft?
none at all.

What is your goal for the next year?

to be happy and to help my little family be happy... and to keep a clean house.... oh, you mean etsy? haha, ok, well, i just want to have a place for all of my creations to go. otherwise they'd be sitting around the house taking up space.

What keeps you motivated when sales are slow?

i don't mind slow sales, really. i've never had "fast" sales, but i just like making things.

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage re-occurring business?

er... chatting... i guess i just hope to get my product out there... but if it doesn't, no bother... i'm making good friends in the process.

If you could share one piece of advice with someone who is considering opening their own store of handmade items, what would it be?

just make what you love. don't try to make something that people will like. just make what you like and keep at it, perfect it... and the right kind of customers will find you.

Product Review - The Ivory Magnolia

The Ivory Magnolia is a wonderful online shop specializing in body cremes, purfume oils, scrubs and soaps and we've tried their amazing purfumes available in many delicious scents.

Our fav is Pink Cotton Candy but we've also tried (and loved) Blue Coconut and Kiwi. Our friends have bought Vanilla and Mango Tango and the concensus is, we love them all!

Available in convenient roll on and sprays, these lovely, natural purfumes do not irritate our sensitive skin and leave us smelling delicious sweet and fragrant all day!

They fit in our purses (which isn't an easy feat considering they are jammed packed) and have never leaked, so we get to enjoy every last drop.

Check out The Ivory Magnolia online store and check our her amazing line of natural body products that are very reasonably priced, sure to make you smell as sweet as candy! http://theivorymagnolia.etsy.com/

Featured Seller - Luvly Gurumi

What does customer service mean to you?

It means being able to put a smile on someone's face at the first glance of their purchase! I take a lot of joy in what I do and just hope that my creations touch people in the same way - when it does, I know I've done my job.

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?

The most memorable experience is still to come! Being brand new to Etsy and the selling scene, I still have much to experience. I'd love to be involved in custom designing – blending ideas of others into existing things that I’ve created or just creating something brand spanking new! When you mush creative minds together, things can only get better!

What sets you apart from other sellers who are selling similar items?

A tad horrible but true, I am a stickler for the perfect stitch. Everything I make is to the best of my ability and I’d never sell anything that I don’t absolutely love myself (which makes selling them and sending them away pretty tough!). Time spent isn’t a limited factor when crafting the perfect item – it’s only complete when you’re honestly 100% happy with your creation. This means it might be a long ride, but unquestionably worthwhile if you’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

How did you learn the skills that make you successful today?

I guess I’ve always been a craft nut! I’d see something that I’d like to make then try to make it. Crocheting came naturally. While browsing on Etsy one day, I came across an awfully cute baby seal pattern (designed by the very talented Amy Gaines). I didn’t know how to crochet but just knew I wanted to make these cuties myself. One week later, with the help of google and books (and of course, lots of trial and error), my first amigurumi had taken form. Things took off from there and I was crocheting things left, right and center! Once I had enough practice, I began designing my own patterns and that’s how my collection came to be.

Do you have any formal training in your craft?

I do not have any formal training in crocheting, only thousands of stitches in practice!

What is your goal for the next year?

The goal for next year and years and years to come is to simply expand the collection! I’d love to add more characters to the family and just keep crocheting in order to improve.

What keeps you motivated when sales are slow?

Hobby first, business second. I do what I do because I whole-heartedly love making amigurumi. I want to share a piece of it with the world and I think it’s wonderful if people are interested in my products. With or without sales, amigurumi will always be my number one hobby.

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage repeat business?

I still have lots to learn in terms of putting myself out there and getting exposure. So far, I’ve been featured in blogs (like this one!) and I hope to dive into chat rooms and forums in due time. Other than that, my friends have been helping me spread the word! As for re-occurring business, I believe my items will speak for themselves – you’re bound to love them and want more!

If you could share one piece of advice with someone who is considering opening their own store of handmade items, what would it be?

Go for it! It doesn’t hurt to put a little piece of you out there to see how the world reacts. Good things ought to be shared!
We ADORE Luvly Gurumi and we know you will too! How can you not, look how cute they are!

In their first day on etsy they already made a sale, it takes most stores 3 weeks to a month to break their first sale. We know this shop will be a fav, and soon enough these items will be in high demand. Best of luck! Although we know you don't need it :)
Check out there etsy store by clicking on the cute pictures in this article or on their name,

The most memorable experience with one of my customers was when they sent me a photo of my creation with happy faces.

Featured Seller - Bflirty Jewelry

What does customer service mean to you?

Having your customer feel special when they open their package. I have had many customers write to tell me they felt like it was their birthday when they received their jewelery. I love that!

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?

I was on the Train through central Australia showing a lovely lady some of my designs to pass the time. She had stated that she detested pearls as they were old fashioned, boring and reminded her too much of grannies. We arrived at our destination, exchanged phone numbers and went our seperate ways. The next day I get a call from her asking to buy a version of my Willow Necklace I had shown her (in my etsy shop) A lovely necklace that is chock full of pearls the one gem that she hated!!

How did you learn the skills that make you successful today?

It was beaten into me! Actually trial and error is closer to the truth.

A few years ago I had an intensive 1 on 1 program with a Master Goldsmith while living in Thailand and since then I have also been attending classes facilitated by an amazing local jeweler.
I also attended art school for my high school years, and then received a full scholarship from Heritage Canada to study Aboriginal Arts in the NAPAT Program (National Aboriginal Professional Artists Training) in British Columbia. I have mostly been interested in and studied costume design during many of these years but realized later on that its the accessories that I am in love with!

What is your goal for the next year?

To improve on the previous year!

What keeps you motivated when sales are slow?

9 times out of 10 if sales are slow its my own fault. Knowing that a little bit of effort and the fact I can always do much better than before is my motivation.

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage re-occurring business?

I wrap each item in tissue add a personalized sticker and tuck it into an organza gift bag. I also always send a personalized thank you note with each purchase. This makes the customer feel special and it shows as I get alot of new customers who tell me their friend raved about me and they just had to check my shop out.
With returning customers I will randomly tuck a little treat into their packages. Sometimes a simple sweet pair of earrings, or a silver polishing cloth.

If you could share one piece of advice with someone who is considering opening their own store of handmade items, what would it be?

Not everyone is going to love your product, Don't sweat it.

Please visit Bflirty Jewelry's website for a full selection of products. All beautiful pieces in this shop. We can see why they have done so well!

Featured Seller - Lorelie Kay Designs

What part of the world are you in?

I live in Omaha, Nebraska. I have lived here in the Midwest
all my life and love it here.

What does customer service mean to you?

The biggest thing customer service means to me is communication and honesty.
If you sell an honest item, and communicate effectively all the way through the sale, I think your customers will be happy.

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?

It is so hard to pin point one! I have had so many great customers
through the years. I guess one that stands out is a woman who asked me if I would make a custom paperweight with some of her Grandmothers items. Not knowing me at all, she sent me the only picture she had(the original!), an old watch, and a couple other momentos. She told me to do whatever I thought was best. I created a wonderful keepsake for her, and she was very happy with the final item. This sticks out in my mind, becasue it made me feel so wonderful that she trusted me with her most cherish memories of her Grandma.

What sets you apart from other sellers who are selling similar items?

That is also a very hard question! I guess I never really thought that anything set me apart. There are so many talented people out there. And we are all different. I guess the main thing would be just my mind. It is always thinking and creating. I just make what I love. I cannot just make what I or other people think will sell. If I had to say one thing, I guess I would say that I dance to my own drummer!

How did you learn the skills that make you successful today?

I have learned my art, just through trail and error. I have learned through LOTS of mistakes a few tears! I have also been in the retail business world for many years, and I think that has helped me with knowing how
to market my items.

Do you have any formal training in your craft?

I have taken a couple fine arts classes, but I am no realy great at the "formal" type thing. I just like to dive in and see what happens. I guess I feel creativity cannot be taught. It is something
you have to feel deep inside.

What is your goal for the next year?

My goal is to just keep doing what I am doing. Making what I love. Maybe trying
a few new things. I try not to get to hung up on setting specific goals I have to meet, like having a certain amount of sales, so many shows, etc. Then it starts feeling like a job, and I loose my focus of WHY I am doing it. Because I love it. If I were to say one goal for next year is the goal though, I would say the same one I have for every year. Just to be happy!

What keeps you motivated when sales are slow?

I just try not to think about it. I go in my art room, look at all the wonderful
things I have, just waiting to be created, and that motivates me every time.

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage re-occurring business?

I post on some of the boards and I have a website. I do a few shows and will give out business cards to anyone who will take one. I have also taken my things to several different small shops with success.

I try to package nicely and make the buying experience pleasant, so my customers will return. But mostly, I just make things and list them on Etsy. I am working on selling on my website too. I try to have the philosophy, "If you make it, they will come"!

If you could share one piece of advice with someone who is considering opening their own store of handmade items, what would it be?

My best advise would be to make what you love, make it well, and be true to yourself! I honestly
think, if you offer a good product that you believe in, you will have success. Also, to remember, it takes time, and HARD work.
You have to keep your things fresh and offer great customer service. Answer emails, ship promptly and be professional. It really is a lot of work. But what a job!!

Thanks so much Lorelie! We love your jewelry, and are happy to show it off for you!

Featured Seller - Marieisabella's Little Shop of Creatures

What part of the world are you in?

I live in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

What does customer service mean to you?

It's making sure your customer is 100% happy with their purchase, if there is a problem I will fix it:)

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?

It was my first sale, the look on their face of how happy they were, was the best memory.

What sets you apart from other sellers who are selling similar items?

I really care about my work, the moment I start on a piece, I put my heart and soul in it.

How did you learn the skills that make you successful today?

I did attend college, that helped me perfect my skills and there I was able to create art that I wouldn't have had the resources to make otherwise.

Do you have any formal training in your craft?

Yes, I received my Bachelors in Art, my concentration was in Ceramics.

What is your goal for the next year?

My goal is to add more items to my store and offer a wide variety of items, from jewelry to customized stuffed animals.

What keeps you motivated when sales are slow?

I just chat up in forums and meet new people in the chats, making new friends in etsy is a great way to promote and support others, in return they promote and support you! If I end up trading with a seller for a wonderful item, that it was a good week!

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage repeat business?

I promote in the forums, on my blog and offer sales. Also I talk about my art at work, and get a lot of new clients that way as well.

If you could share one piece of advice with someone who is considering opening their own store of handmade items, what would it be?

Open up shop and don't have too high of expectations, you might not get a sale for months but work at your shop, promote it and eventually it will pay off. Rome wasn't build in a day! Don't give up, if anything you are expressing yourself and your talent, and that in itself is worth the effort.

A personal experience, a connection withthe person behind the business.

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?

It's memorable any time I heara positive response from a customer.

I try to pick materialsthat are a little unconventional. I don't take myself too seriously, and I try to reflectthat in my crafting. I like to have fun with sewing.

Lots of library books and mistakes!I believe I've learned by experiencing how not to do something. My husband has helped mea lot with social networking and keeping my perspective.

Do you have any formal training in your craft?

No, I started with ideas in books and on craftblogs and websites and sort of went from there. I've never attended a class.

What is your goal for the next year?

I'd like to expand my shop a little with a couple more creative designs.

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage re-occurring business?

I try to keep updates andpromos out there on Myspace and I also have a small email newsletter in circulation. I also stay active onEtsy and the team forums I belong to.

Featured Seller - MuffinTopDesigns

What part of the world are you in?

I am in Toronto, Ontario, Canada!

What does customer service mean to you?

Customer service means treating people the way i would like to be treated. It also means making a high quality product at an affordable price!

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?

Someone purchased two sock monkeys for her children last Christmas. Making these perfect for her two little ones was a wonderful experience! She still sometimes sends me photos of them with their monkeys. It really makes me glad that they love them that much!

What sets you apart from other sellers who are selling similar items?

I would hope that my design sense keeps people coming back! while i like to offer classic pieces, i also enjoy going out on a creative limb and trying new things.

How did you learn the skills that make you successful today?

While i have always been an artsy person, it wasn't until early 2007 that i started beading and making jewelry. I'm mostly self-taught, but have taken a few classes in different techniques. I'm actually taking a beginner's metalsmithing class right now that i'm thoroughly enjoying!

Do you have any formal training in your craft?

I actually have my BA in Visual Art and my Masters in Art Therapy - and would LOVE to take a jewelry making certificate sometime in the future!

What is your goal for the next year?

My goal is to learn to balance my life! :) We're expecting our first baby in late April 2009! I'm excited to be a mother... and to see how motherhood will influence my designs. Sales-wise, I'm hoping to hit 1000 sales in my etsy shop.

What keeps you motivated when sales are slow?

The fact that i have tons of beautiful stones and shining metal to work with! when sales are slow, it actually gives me time to work on new things - take the time to sketch and "test drive" new designs. I also spend more time looking for inspiration when things are slow - packing and shipping really takes up a lot of time!

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage re-occurring business?

I wish i could do more, actually. Working a full time job and creating on the side really doesn't leave much time for marketing. However, i'm hoping to draw up an "official" marketing plan one of these days and figure out how i can reach more people! In the meantime, i hope that good customer service and my sunny personality (lol) keep people coming back.

If you could share one piece of advice with someone who is considering opening their own store of handmade items, what would it be?

Be confident in your craft, and create something that you are proud to have out there in the world! Take creative risks, and let your love for what you do shine through.

Thanks so much MuffinTopDesigns! Congrats on your new little buddle of joy that will be joining your family in April! What an exciting time for you. We wish you all the best. Please check out Cylene's designs on her wepage http://muffintopdesigns.etsy.com/.

Featured Seller - Lunatique Art

What part of the world are you in?

I am hiding in the woods in America's midwest...

What does customer service mean to you?

Absolutely everything, it is essential to the art business.

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?

I have been fortunate that in such a short time I have had so many memorable experiences. My absolute favorite though, was a very young girl who walked past my booth several times at an art fair. Each time she shyly peeked in. Finally, pulling her dad in with her, she gathered the courage to step inside. She pointed out a work and told her dad that she "had to have it", it was the "one". I was so tickled that out of over a hundred exhibitors she was so drawn to my work that I practically gave it away. She was so thrilled with her first ever art purchase and she wanted her dad to take a picture of us. It was adorable and I was proud that a child could feel so connected to my work.

What sets you apart from other sellers who are selling similar items?

More than anything, even the sale, I want to share my work and I want people to appreciate it. I am so grateful when someone does appreciate it that I could nearly give it away... but I have to eat...it's unfortunate, but apparently essential to survival. I strive to channel my emotions through the creative process and for me it's more about expression than technique. I want them to love their work and feel something in it that makes them want to have it.

How did you learn the skills that make you successful today?

I learned many techniques in classrooms throughout the years but developing a personal style and creating strictly for fun are two fundamentals that I feel make me successful today.

Do you have any formal training in your craft?

I have taken classes throughout the years and will more than likey take more in the future. It's important to continue to nurture and grow your skill.

What is your goal for the next year?

My major goal is to improve my skills and create many new incredible works.

Featured Seller - Leogistic

What part of the world are you in?

I live in the United States in a small town called Farmville, North Carolina

What does customer service mean to you?
Customer service is very important. My customers matter to me, so I try and put my all into dealing with my customers and i believe it shows in my products.

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?
I'm still looking for it.

What sets you apart from other sellers who are selling similar items?
What sets me apart is that I haven't seen to many people doing what I do. I thrive off of being unique.

How did you learn the skills that make you successful today?
Honestly a lot of it just comes to me. Then to I try and sound advice, and experimenting. So of the most successful things we see in our world have come from people who simply just play around with stuff.

Do you have any formal training in your craft?
I did go to school for graphic design which allowed me to see the world of art in a different light. I think it is always good to explore new avenues, because you never know how it will benefit you.

What is your goal for the next year?
My goal for the next year is to make what I do more widely known and acceptable. I really think that things I produce are awaiting for the people to see. I feel like once the right people or person sees what I do then my journey is that much more fulfilling.

What keeps you motivated when sales are slow? That is a good question b/c a lot of times I do become frustrated at times. I really am passionate about what I do. Art has been in my veins since I was in the second grade.

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage re-occurring business?
Gee there is nothing I really do out of the ordinary. I hand out and post cards, promote myself in the etsy community, Facebook, and Mycraft. If only I had the power of persuasion lol! No telling what would happen.

If you could share one piece of advice with someone who is considering opening their own store of handmade items, what would it be? Don't let people crush your dreams. Take advice from others who have been in the field for some time and stay true to yourself.

Contest Ideas... Share Yours, Join Us!

CONTEST IDEAS for "I MADE THAT!" blog

I'm trying to come up with a contest for this blog with a theme.

I need sellers who are interested in donating an item or gift certificate for a giveaway.

While I rack my brain trying to think of a theme, please send me an email to imadethat@hotmail.com with the subject "Giveaway" if you are interested.

I am thinking a few items within a similar theme, like "Babies" or "Wedding" etc. Something where a bunch of sellers can contribute together and we can create a terrific prize for a lucky blog reader. The contest would run for a month so we can get a lot of entries and exposure.

If you are interested or have a great contest idea, contact me!

Thanks guys

Jessie

What part of the world are you in?

Scotland - just near Glasgow, in a town called Helensburgh. It is surrounded by hills (which, at the moment, are covered in snow) and overlooks the Firth of Clyde. Originally, I am from Ireland but I moved over here some years ago to study at art college.

What does customer service mean to you?

I really want my customers to have a good experience from buying from me and I love getting feedback from them. I think one of the most exciting parts of my experience with Etsy so far is the correspondence from customers – I’ve had some lovely personal emails on top of the more formal feedback on my site and hope that, equally, people will contact me if they are disappointed in any way. I love the idea of people all over the world getting so much pleasure from the stuff I make in my wee studio.

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?

I had one customer just recently who had been searching and searching for a ‘more masculine’ tea cosy for a birthday present and found mine at the last minute – she mailed me through Etsy conversations just on the off-chance that I could quickly send her one by special delivery. She was so pleased that I could and we had a lovely exchange of mails throughout the day sorting it out – it was great fun.

What sets you apart from other sellers who are selling similar items?

I think that when you hand-make something, a personal touch and even personality comes through in the work – it’s in the very nature of selecting fabrics, colours and materials and in what you choose to put together so no two makers are ever really making the same things.

How did you learn the skills that make you successful today?

I grew up knitting and sewing with my mum and gran and building and gluing with my dad, my family is full of artists, designers and makers so it’s in my blood.

Do you have any formal training in your craft?

Yes, I did my first degree in Constructed Textiles (knit, weave and tapestry) and my Masters degree in Fine Art. I also taught in various art colleges before stopping to my have my little boy and concentrate on my own work.

What is your goal for the next year?
I’m really new to all this – I only set up my business, ‘re:made’, in November (2008). Prior to that, all my output have been gallery- based. So, this year, I hope to build up the business and develop my range of products and the materials I use. I also want to emphasize the environmentally friendly element of my work which is a really important factor for me.

What keeps you motivated when sales are slow?

So far, my experience has been very positive and the business is slowing building. However, when I get a chance, I like to review my site and my products - it’s important to find the time to develop new work in amongst producing items which you know are selling well. There are lots of opportunities to promote your shop through Etsy too, through forums and by visiting other sites as well as by spreading the word in your local area.

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage re-occurring business?
In November and December, I did a few good craft fairs in my area and handed out lots of publicity material for my Etsy shop. I have been visiting forums on Etsy which is how I was offered this great opportunity and in April, I am doing a small exhibition in a nearby gallery called the Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine. I hope recurring business will come through good customer service.

If you could share one piece of advice with someone who is considering opening their own store of handmade items, what would it be?
It’s very early for me to be handing out much advice but take good clear photographs in good light, keep adding new items to your site and most importantly, have fun.

Thank you re:made! We love your shop, and wish you the best of luck in 2009!

KNITTING & CROCHETING - Benefits Galore!!

To create something with your hands is always rewarding. A creative mind, willing to learn and practice a skill, results in a "handmade" project to be proud of.

Knitting and Crocheting are two similar mediums that can produce projects ranging in size from booties to large Afghans. As knitters and crocheters know, the skill is easily learned and the benefits are worth the time and effort dedicated to the craft.

I have heard it said, that if the mind wants to knit, then knitting will produce happiness, which will in turn lead to a healthier life. Knitting and Crocheting promotes calmness, reduces stress levels and improves hand agility by increasing the flexibility of the fingers and hand muscles.

Using natural materials such as Alpaca and Sheep’s wool, creates a “back to nature” feeling, along with the positive feeling of accomplishment when a project has been completed.

So, to stimulate your creative and artistic side…try knitting and/or crocheting, which are fairly inexpensive hobbies, that can give you that "Handmade" pride feeling. Visit the wonderful Etsy suppliers who can help you choose the right materials and project to suit your skill level and interest. And remember to have fun!!

What part of the world are you in?
California, USA

What does customer service mean to you?
It means treating the customer well. Delivering a great product at a great price as fast as possible - even that isn't enough. Good customer service involves acknowledging the sale, keeping the customer updated on the status, being available for questions and custom orders, and having your well packaged item delivered on time.

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?
My most memorable experience was the first custom order. It was wonderful to be asked to make a custom item. After some nervousness about having it meet their expectations, it was great to hear it that it fit well and they were happy.

What sets you apart from other sellers who are selling similar items?
Although it is hard to distinguish yourself from so many jewelry sellers, Roxy's designs are unique and mostly specialize in earrings. Of course, beside jewelry SweetRoxs also sells knitted items. Lully's knitted items are sweet with the wrist warmers being a popular item.

How did you learn the skills that make you successful today?
Lully has been knitting for most of her life. She can follow a pattern or follow her own ideas to create a new item. After being frustrated at not finding jewelry that fits her personality, Roxy began learning to make jewelry. She has read instructions, watched videos, and experimented on friends and family. Being willing to try something new or just play with a new idea leads to what will bring you success.

Do you have any formal training in your craft?
We do not. Learning the craft from friends and family has been very rewarding.

What is your goal for the next year?
SweetRoxs' goal for 2009 is to reach out to more people interested in handmade items, while still being able to keep it personal and fun.

What keeps you motivated when sales are slow?
Slow sales are a motivation in themselves to find ways to reach customers. The time can be used to find more outlets or create new items.

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage re-occurring business? SweetRoxs encourages re-occurring business by making items well and treating the customer even better. We've been fortunate to receive great feedback. Being a fairly new seller, it has been fun finding so many ways to reach new clients - online, charity auctions, word of mouth, even an ad on Roxy's car has gotten people asking about SweetRoxs.

If you could share one piece of advice with someone who is considering opening their own store of handmade items, what would it be?
My advice would be to make something that you really put your heart into. It will show in your work.

Thanks so much Susan for the interview, We love your cozy fingerless gloves!

What part of the world are you in?
Arkansas, USA

What does customer service mean to you?
I like communication between the customer and seller before, during, and after a transaction. It's not something I try to do, it is something I want to do! I like making friends on Etsy and I attempt so with all customers and sellers!

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?
My very first sale on Etsy! It was a custom order for painted paper mache letters for the customer's daughter. It was very exciting to see that someone had an interest in my work!! I had waited a while on that first sale and it felt very good!!

What sets you apart from other sellers who are selling similar items?
I love to look at other shops that sell scrapbooking items and greeting cards. I don't like to compare our work, but I realize that they love to do their craft as I love to do mine and it is fun to see all of the wonderful and unique ideas that other artists create!

How did you learn the skills that make you successful today?
I really just started scrapbooking and making cards a few years ago, and I have progressively gotten more experienced and more talented with time! I love it!

Do you have any formal training in your craft?
No, just time sitting at my desk!

What is your goal for the next year?
I would love to establish a good client base for my items. I am not going to set a specific goal because I am not sure where the economy is headed and success to me, is doing well for the moment you are in!

What keeps you motivated when sales are slow?
I guess I just think about how I have really been trying to build a successful business and how much I just don't want to give up on it!

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage re-occurring business?
I chat on the forums on Etsy, post items and discounts. I have joined several BNR and BNS threads as well to promote my business.

If you could share one piece of advice with someone who is considering opening
their own store of handmade items, what would it be?
If this is something you really want to do, just keep at it no matter how the sales are!

Thanks DKRScrapNCraft! Best of luck in 2009!
Make sure to check out DKRScrapNCraft's store for all kinds of goodies!

What part of the world are you in?
California...Southern California to be precise! Pasadena, home of the Rose Parade.

What does customer service mean to you?
A unique opportunity, to say the least! I mean, you've found a kindred spirit...someone who loves your work as much as you do. How can you not be thankful and elated? I do my best to package each item with care, make it pretty, because even if you're buying it for yourself, it's always fun to open a gift!

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?
Well, one of my first orders, a substantial one, too, came from an alchemy bid. A declined bid, actually! It was a simple piece, and I strung it while I was waiting to hear back from the buyer. I saw that my bid was declined, but I convo'd her, and attached pictures of the necklace. I told her that if she liked mine better than the one she had picked, then we could work out the price. She ended up choosing mine, and buying four other pieces from me! Looking back, it was a very bold move on my part, being so new to etsy, but it ended up paying off!

What sets you apart from other sellers who are selling similar items?
Wow! You ask the tough questions! One of the great complexities of being an artist is that you have days when you are hypercritical of your work, thinking that there's nothing special about what you do. Then you have days that you look at your pieces as a whole and realize that you bring together raw materials and elements in such a way that when you look at your pieces as a whole, you see something that is distinctly "you" about them. It's amazing and very satisfying.

How did you learn the skills that make you successful today?
I am the type of person who sees something, and thinks to herself, "I could do that! Teach me!" or "Let's experiment!" As a child, I was a member of 4-H. I had a great mentor who taught me how to cross-stitch, and a babysitter who taught me embroidery. I've always loved to draw and paint and sculpt, but much of my learning in those areas has been from reading or imitation. Jewelry was also something I picked up on my own. One of my roommates taught me how to knit, and I am teaching myself how to crochet again, after several years! I'm always eager to learn new skills, like origami, which I learned from my students.

Do you have any formal training in your craft?
There's a great bead shop near me that offers classes in jewelry-making. I've taken a PMC (Precious Metal Clay) class, and a wire work class there. Other than that, I am pretty much self-taught.

What is your goal for the next year?
One of the biggest goals I have is being more disciplined with my time. I tend to create in spurts, but this year, I'm trying to spend more time in my creative space, even when I don't feel like it. I'm also trying to hone my skills in different art forms. There's next to nothing creative/artistic that I won't try!

What keeps you motivated when sales are slow?
I get motivated by tackling something new...a new skill, technique, or material, or by tackling something old...revising listings, recropping and reshooting photos. Anything that might pay off later that I can invest in today.

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage re-occurring business?
I practically LIVE in the forums and chatrooms lately. It's fun to buy, sell, and trade with fellow etsiers, and it's good exposure. I'm stil learning the ropes! I also sell my jewelry in person to friends and family. Lastly, I wear my necklaces to test drive their durability...and that helps, too!

If you could share one piece of advice with someone who is considering opening their own store of handmade items, what would it be?
Don't be intimidated! There is something special about what YOU do that sets it apart. And the world deserves to know!

Thank you JewelryVixen for the interview, your designs are great and we know you will have much success in 2009!

What part of the world are you in?
I'm in Iceland.

What does customer service mean to you?
Customer service is one of the most important thing if you want to be good seller. It's all about happy customer, and that's in priority for me to make them happy. Than you will also find out that more and more people are buying from you just because of what they heard from their friends ..

What is your most memorable experience with a customer?
I've just started Etsy business, but I've being running leather craft storein Reykjavík cityfor about year now and I have few memorable customers.
For example one that was sadly quite drunk (I'm in downtown) and he hadhis backpackwith him,all of a sudden he had emptied the bag and showedme purse that he had in the bottom. He told me to keep it because it wasso beautiful that I had to sew one like that my self! I told him that I wasn'ta "copycat" and than he mentioned that I shouldn't act like I was "inventingthe wheel" in the handbag business.....Luckily he haven't been at my storesince that day.

What sets you apart from other sellers who are selling similar items?
All or most of my items includes fish skin leather, that is very unique leatherthat is made here in Iceland.

Do you have any formal training in your craft?
No - not yet. I learned building engineering, but decided not to work asengineering when I finished. I think I have found what I like to day in myday job - and as my hobby...

What is your goal for the next year?
I am hoping that my design only (with great help from Etsy) can be my onlyday job. Now I have to put all my hours in showing the world how great thefish skin is.

What keeps you motivated when sales are slow?
That my hearts are racing.. My family and friends. Then I also use the time to make treasury or promoting in the Forums, and they motivate me by telling me what they feel about my products.

What do you do to attract new clients and encourage repeat business?
I send personal message(convo) to all my customers, i also sendhandwrittenthank you note sometimes with more than one business cardalong. I have decided to send gifts along with some of the orders. Whowill get it is just decided by what mood I'm in that minute..Giving doesalways makes me feel so good!
I spend all my hours talking about Gastu and Etsy, I show it off on my Facebook profile, and than I have sent letter to all the media here inIceland hoping that they are interested.

If you could share one piece of advice with someone who is considering opening their own store of handmade items, what would it be?

You have to do what you feel like, don't hesitate if you think that's the right thing to do.I would say jump for it and welcome aboard.
**We were looking through Gastu's store and we noticed a similarity in the items we clicked on,the shipping was $0! We love little perks like free shipping!

Thanks so much for taking the time to talk to us!
